Cum Hoc Fallacy

It means that when two or more things happen together, it seems as if the two things are linked, but it is not the case.

An example: "Singapore had a falling birth rate and an increasing population for the past few decades. Therefore, a falling birth rate causes an increase in population."

How has technology affected the way that I learn?

With the use of technology in my learning, I started to learn at a faster speed. In school during the online lessons, I would take out my laptops and do the assignment assigned. When using the laptops, I would be able to search for the things that I do not know. This includes using online dictionaries which are much faster than dictionaries in the book form, using websites for research when I am unsure of any topic. In the past, the teacher would just tell us about a topic, and the students would crowd around the teacher and ask questions, causing the classroom to be a mess, Now, the teacher would make us do reseach online, which allows us to learn ourselves, and we would not need to wait for the other students to ask finish their questions before we are able to ask questions. Thus, this increases our efficiency, and enavled us to learn at a much faster speed.

War photo

In this school, there were no fans, no chairs, no tables and no money. The only thing it had were a few black children, stricken with poverty. They did not wear any clothing and were so thin and malnutrition that they looked as if standing straight was a challenging task. The limbs of those boys were just literally skin and bones, with thighs thinner than an average man’s wrist. If you just looked at their stomach, you might think that they are obese, but the truth was that their stomach was bloated, caused by a prolonged period of lack of food. These children had a bloated stomach exactly like a balloon: Large when seen on the outside, but empty in the inside. In areas like this, wars have made them different from other children. A bowl of rice may be the best gift for them, for they do not hope for toys, but they hope that they will not starve to death.

There was a boy that was special. He had clothing, but it was torn. He was taller, but as skinny as the others. He was most likely older than the rest, but these were not the things that made him truly special. He was an albino. He was white, from head to toe, with the exception of his eyes. He placed his hands on his knee, and bent down, as if he was a frail old man that had problems standing up straight. He was holding on to a can, and he placed it near his face, as if it was of utmost importance. A can of food may save his life.

Despite the dirty floor, the children did not have shoes, for one simple reason: If they spent money on shoes, they would not be able to live to wear the shoes. They did not smile at all, their faces depicting all sought of negative thoughts. This was unlike other kids of the same age, where they played all day and night, and were cheerful and hopeful. These children had a common, unmistakable characteristic: They were all pessimistic. In the hearts of every single one of them, fear and hunger were always present. Due to the war, these children had lost their playfulness, lost their childishness, lost their cheerfulness, and most importantly, lost their childhood.

Caffeine----> Good or Bad?

In my opinion, caffeine in harmful to health, because it may possibly stop us from being able to learning. When I was primary five, I had a habit of drinking a few cups of coffee everyday. When I went to a primary five learning camp organised by my school, I did not bring any packets of instant coffee, and the camp only provides us with plain water. As a result, I was unable to stay focused and alert and I felt sleepy throughout the camp, and slept a few times during the activities, where we learned basic survival skills! This was due to the fact that I was depended too much on caffeine to keep me awake and alert. Caffeine makes us dependent on it in order to keep awake and alert. As a result, without caffeine, we might not be able to be alert and may lose out on many learning processes, and we might have a disadvantage against others. As a result, due to the fact that we might feel lethargic when we are deprived of caffeine, caffeine might possibly hamper our ability to learn, and causing us to lose out on some knowledge.

Do we still need heroes?(Essay)

In my opinion, we still need heroes. Heroes are the saviours of the world in times of disasters, and they are a role model for people to learn from. Also, they can lead us into success.

Heroes are saviours of the world in times of disasters. An example will be that in the nuclear crisis that happened in Japan, many brave workers, risked their lives and went to the nuclear plant to try and stop the nuclear plant from generating more radiation by spraying water on the plant to cool the plant. By cooling the plant the rate of nuclear reaction will reduce, but this all came with a cost: the workers are suffering greatly from the impacts of radiation, as they are in extremely close proximity to the plant. Some workers even went into the nuclear plant to try and reduce the amount of radiation produced. The entire world benefited from the workers' heroic actions as the world suffered from lesser form the effects of radiation. The workers continued to help to solve the problem of this nuclear crisis, in spite of the fact that more than twenty workers were already injured. Due to their contributions, they are very well-respected and recognised. The world needs heroes to do the things that most people would not dare to do, and we also need heroes to help us in times of disaster, so that we can live a better life. As a result, we need heroes as they are the ones that will save the world when we really need them to help us.

We need heroes as they are the role models for people to learn from. An example will be that a great political leader, and one of the founders of modern Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew. Lee kuan Yew was the former prime minister of Singapore, and he spent a great amount of his life, over fifty years, contributing to Singapore. He led Singapore into a successful first world country, from the harsh conditions of the past. In the past, Singapore faced many problems like the housing crisis, where over half a million people did not have proper housing; the lack of military defence, with only fifty officers, one thousand men, and two naval vessels; a lowly skilled labour force with low literacy rate. However, now, Singapore is one of the most developed countries in Asia. One value of Lee Kuan Yew that we all should learn is serving our country. When Singaporeans see that they had such a great leader, that helped the country for most of his lives, they will show him respect and learn from him. This value of serving the country is important as we all should help our country, as it is the "root" of us, without a country, there will be no family and we all should learn to serve our country. Thus, heroes good role models for us to learn from, and we learn from them as we all know about they heroic stories, and since we know about them, it would be easier for us to learn from them. Thus, we need heroes to act as role models for us to learn from.

We need heroes to lead us into success. One example is Martin Luther King Jr, a leader in the civil rights movement. He led many people into the fight to gain equal treatment for all Americans. His fight in the civil rights movement was the cause of his death. However, even after his death, the civil rights movement continued and eventually lead to a successful end, leading to equal treatment for all Americans. Heroes have the ability to lead us into success, like the case of Martin Luther King Jr, he led the civil rights movement into s successful end, giving black people equal rights as the white people, making America a better place for all people.

From the above reasons, we still need heroes as they helped us in many areas, like leading us into success, being a role model, and save us in times of disaster. Also, heroes are still needed due to the fact that they are beneficial to the society.

Reflection on the talk regarding the book: Towerhill reclaimed

I had attended a talk on one of Hwa Chong Institutions' recent publications. This book is titled "Towerhill Reclaimed", and it is a collation of the works of our seniors a few years ago. This book was originally named, "Parnassus", which is the hilltop home of Greek Muses, and the home of music, poetry, learning. However, as the seniors felt that people might be unable to understand the meaning of this title, they rejected the name and chose to use "Towerhill Reclaimed" as the title. The front cover of the book is black and white, and there was a person with a clock in his body and carrying a sword. The clock represents the present, past and future. Since this book is a collation of the works of seniors of the past, which was just published, and might benefit people in future, I feel that it is a smart move to place that picture on the cover page. Also, I feel that both the clock and the title represents Hwa Chong Institution as Hwa Chong Institution is located on high ground, and has a clock tower. Therefore, I feel that one of the reasons for the title and the picture on the front cover might be to recognise Hwa Chong Institution in the production of this book.

This book is split into two parts. The first section is mainly about culture and tradition. However, the second part is mainly about progressing towards the future. The editors explained that they wanted to create a natural progression from the past to present. This also had a link with the "clock" in the cover page. The hands of the clock always move clockwise, and with every movement of the clock, we are moving into another second into the future. Similarly, with every movement of the hands on the clock, the present had turned into the past, and it becomes history. As a person progresses, he needs to look at his past to know if his actions were beneficial or not, and improve on his actions. When a true learner looks backs, he would have found out how badly he had done last time, as he had already improved tremendously from his past mistakes.

There is another thing about this book that made it so meaningful. That is, the book was published the same day as the Japanese natural disaster. Each book cost ten dollars, and all the money collected will be sent to Japan to help out those that are affected by the disaster. This also shows that hwa chong boys write books not so much for the money, but write for the art of literature, and that hwa chong boys are willing to help out those that are in need without people asking or reminding them to help out.

I feel that in a writer's life, publishing a book is an obstacle that might hinder his further success. If the book is very successful, and the writer receives praises from a lot of people, he must control his emotions and not be proud and arrogant, as it might lead to complacency. As all human beings have feelings and emotions, it is very hard to tell ourselves to be humble and treat this success as a learning process, but it is extremely easy for us to just treat this success as a recognition and be complacent. As a result, being humble despite a huge success is very difficult, but once we overcome our complacency and proudness, we will be able to improve in an amazing rate. If the book is not successful, the writer might be laughed or mocked at, and if he does not have courage to face this mistake, and take this as a learning process, he might be demoralised and depressed. Also, the writer might lose interest in writing as he might take it that writing is only a source of embarrassment. Therefore, in order for a writer to be successful, he needs to have courage to face his mistake and turn to a positive mindset, which is to treat the remarks by others as stepping stones for success. It is only when a writer possesses both humbleness and courage, will he succeed in his writing career.

This was a very fruitful talk and I have benefited greatly from this experience. I feel that my investment of 30-40min in this talk is indeed worthwhile, and I hope to be able to be exposed to more of such wonderful and meaningful learning experience in the future!

Do we still need heroes?

In my opinion, we still need heroes. We need heroes to stand out and help us in times of disaster. One such example is when the fukushima nuclear crisis occurred in Japan, many workers risked their lives and tried to stop the nuclear plant radiation from generating more radiation. Their heroic actions caused people around the world to benefit, and they are widely recognised and respected. These heroes risked their life in order to save the lives of others, and because of them, the entire region and the world suffered lesser from the radiation, at a cost: the workers are exposed to more radiation. In today's society, we still need heroes to do those things that most people do not dare to do, and we also need them to save the world.

A comic book that I read recently

The comic book that I rad is called "The celestial zone 21". I enjoyed the idea of the writer, which is to mix the environment in the 21st century with the art of fighting, including strange attacks, mysterious stone, and magical events. I read the book both for the art and the writing. The drawings in the book was really interesting, and it captured my attention when I started reading it. However, the content of the book was also quite attracting, as it is really very creative, with different people with unique personalities. Some people were motivated by righteousness, whike others motivated by power. I recommend this book to anybody that have a passion for action comic strips, as this is a book that comic lovers would not want to miss!

An English-language fiction book that I have read recently

The book that I read is called the 39 clues. I enjoyed the part where the character were faced with many different obstacles, but still managed to escape unhurt by using interesting means of escape. The book challenged my imagination, as it was really hard to imagine how the things could turn out the way it was written in the book, but this was what that made this book interesting. I would recommend this book to people that had no interest in reading books, as this book really makes us thing out of the box, with a very adventurous content!

How prejudice can lead to war

Prejudice in America between 1861 to 1865 was one of the reason that caused the deadly Civil War which resulted in the death of more than 500,000 soldiers. One of the reasons was that the northern states and the federal government wanted all americans to be treated equally. However, the southern states of america, whose economy depended heavily on slavery, were against the idea. As a result of the difference in the view of treatment of black people, which are slaves, the southern satates had a war with the federal government. Due to the prejudice against black people in the south, the south were unwilling to accept blacks and this was one of the reasons that caused the Civil War in Anerica.

IN-CLASS ONLINE LESSON #6

Dear Kumiko Makihara, How are you there in Japan? Is your living condition there all right? I hope that you have found safe place for you and your family to stay in. I have heard of the devastating effect the huge tsunamis and earthquakes had brought, and I express my deepest my condolences. Although I am many miles away from you, I can feel the pain and suffering of the people of Japan, through the Internet and television. I really hope that everything will go well in Japan.

Please stay strong, my friend. I know you have suffered greatly from the great destructive forces of Mother Nature, and that it is a great pain to see people dying everywhere, seeing corpse on streets and entire buildings reduced to rumble. I know the disaster affects you greatly when you see your property destroyed within seconds, and the greatest pain of all: seeing and feeling how your family members leave you one by one, in this time of hopelessness. However, you should not give up, at times of disaster, treat it as a test of courage, and overcome your fears. You need to go on in life and move away from crying and depression. After all, you are not alone, your friends, relatives and family members that survived will be there for you, and they need you to be there for them! The entire world is trying to help your country overcome the damage of this disaster, and I believe, it would not take long for the houses, schools and other schools in Japan to be rebuilt. With the entire world's help, and your faith in us, together we can help you get over these "dark moments". This may be one of the most terrible moments of your life, but once you live through it, you will be able to enjoy the luxuries that you used to have.

Instead of living your life in bitterness, why not be optimistic and live on with life? Remember, "Tough time never last, tough people do", treat it as a test of courage, and live through this disaster, learning from your experience. You cannot always control what goes on outside, but you can always control what goes on inside of you. Do not be influenced by the disaster into thinking that life is meaningless. You should be optimistic and accept what that comes to you with a positive mindset.

After saying all this, I hope that you will persevere no matter what life has thrown you, and always stay strong, for there will be people supporting you. Do not forget that you have a friend here that will help you. If you have any problems, feel free to contact me and I will try me very best to help you. Everything that you do now feeds the future; no action is an empty one. If you want to return to the great lives of the past, strive on, and do your best to make your life a better one. Once again, you are not alone, and I will always be there for you! Be optimistic!

Yours sincerely,

Chan Chia Ler

Experience of presenting my project in Projects Day Competition prelims 2011

During projects day competition 2011 prelim round, I present my project in front of both teacher-judges and fellow schoolmates. When it was my turn to present, I started to feel nervous as I did not have much experience presenting in front of so many people. I tried to calm myself down by thinking that many other groups have also presented successfully and that I can also do it successfully. I also tried to speak louder as I was once told to speak louder when feeling nervous as when we are able to hear our own voices, he feeling of nervous will not be so grate. Although I had some "cooling" techniques to calm myself down, I was still unable to fully remove my nervousness and I kept sweating throughout the entire presentation. However, I manage to reduce my stage fright greatly and I feel that it was a very good experience for me.

Chinese Chess(xiang qi)

From wikipedia, i clicked on this website: http://www.crockford.com/chess/xiangqi.html The information on the website is a guide for people to learn how to play Chinese Chess, it covered not many tactics, but it gives a lot of the rules and regulations in a xiangqi match. The source is used properly as it is cited as one of the sources of that wikipedia page, and also because the information in the website is relevant, and is used in this wikipedia page.

The website that I have researched independently is http://www.chessvariants.com/xiangqi.html. This website gives us a detailed explanation of the function of each chess piece, and also common symbols that we see which represent the actual chess piece. Also, this website gives us a brief description on how to play Chinese Chess, and some tactics that we can use when playing Chinese Chess. This website uses interactive elements like videos and pictures to make readers better understand the concept and the instructions of the game.

After comparing the two sources, I find that the information in the source in wikipedia is quite accurate, as it covers most of the basic knowledge we need to know in order to play Chinese Chess, which is one of the purpose of this source. Furthermore, most of the instructions are correct. However, as compared to the source I studied independently, the source from wikipedia is a bit biase, as it only states the benefits of Chinese Chess, and how good and nice Chinese Chess is. I feel that its purpose is to promote chinese chess by showing how fun Chinese Chess is, and thus it shows very little or none of the bad aspects of Chinese Chess, and wrote in such a way that shows that Chinese Chess is the best game in the world. Overall, I feel that this source is credible, but only to the extent of the instructions and description of each cheepiece, as I find that the part on how good Chinese Chess is a bit biase as no particular evidence, like survey or report is stated in the website to support the fact that Chinese Chess is a great game, although the writer feels that Chinese Chess is an "excellent game"and is "much livelier game than Chess".

ONLINE LESSON FOR 4 APRIL: EXPOSITORY WRITING

1)Racial slurs should be illegal.Do you agree? I feel that racial slurs should be illegal. There are many different races in this world, and they all have different views. If all of them are racist towards each other, would peace ever happen? I feel that the answer is no. Different races should respect each others views and live in harmony. Racism is a very sensitive thing, and by being racist, they are violating human rights. Therefore, it is best to stop these slurs by using the law.

2)When I was in primary school, a group of my friends and I, all Chinese, went to the canteen drink stall to buy drinks. After we had bought the drinks we headed to a seat. Just then, an Indian boy ran and bang onto one of us. The juice spilled onto the ground, but did not spill on us. The boy repeatedly apologised and paid for the cost of the drink. However, we did not let the matter rest. We repeatedly called him "niggro" and "charcoal". He felt very upset and he quickly ran off.

The next day, our form teacher called us to see her. Apparently the Indian boy had reported to the teacher. Our form teacher scolded us severely and we were punished by removing our recess for a day. Then, she explained that although the boy had bang onto us, we should not do this to him. The boys was at fault first, but what we did was even more serious. She said that racial slur is a very sensitive thing and we can get ourselves in deep trouble if we insulted others in public. She also told us that we should stop this act immediately and prevent it from being a habit of ours.

As I grew up, I started to understand how being racist can bring us into deep trouble. If we made racist remarks or slur at others in public, once we are caught, the law has the right to deal with us. As a more mature boy now, I realised how inconsiderate I was then. We should respect and help other races, and not be happy at other's expenses. Different races should live in harmony and together we our identity should be nationality, and not race.

Jack & Jill

Reflection
Today was one of the worse day I had ever lived through. Our mother told Jill an I to fetch a pail of water, but on the way, I saw a snake and out of curiosity, used my pail to hit it. It turned to face me and tried to bite me. I jumped back and tripped, and fell down the hill. Although the deep scare at the back of my head still exist, I was glad that I was not bitten by that highly venomous snake, as I might have lost a limb or two. From this painful experience, I learned that we should leave wild animals alone. I was also very glad that my mother was knowledgeable and knew the perfect recipe to heal my wound: vinegar with brown paper.

Argumentative
In my opinion, parents should not ask their children to fetch water on hills by themselves. At the very least, an adult must be accompanying them. When small children walk up hills, they are unaware of the dangers that they might face. Children like to play on hills, where their parents are not nagging at them, and they have freedom. But, there are many rocks and stones and slippery areas on the hill, where children might fall down. Without the parents' supervision, children would play all sorts of dangerous things like running about in slippery areas. This might result them to fall, and they might by severely injured. A recent example was Jack, who fell from the top of a hill. This sparked a media sensation. With an adults' supervision, they would stop children from playing in dangerous areas of the hill. Although the well on the great hill of this town contains a large supply of water, I strongly believe that parents should not ask their children to fetch water on hills by themselves.

Reflection on assignment
After doing this assignment, I find that this assignment was very interesting and I learned alot. This assignment really tests us on our creativity and our ability to understand things. Through this assignment, I realised how we can transform a simple nursery rhyme into different forms of passage. By expanding the rhyme, we need to have a deep understanding of the rhyme. This was also a very fresh approach to learning as I had never tried this our before. In conclusion, I feel that this assignment is really helpful in training our writing skills and I hope to have more of this type of assignments.
