Theme: Justice and mercy
The United States should have shown justice toward Osama bin Laden by imprisoning him, before going to trial, rather than killing him. Answer me. Do you think it is alright to kill a defenceless man straight away, even if he had caused great harm? I strongly disagree.
We all know that Osama bin Laden was the head of the terrorist group that caused the September eleven terrorist attack on America, and that he had caused a huge loss of lives. This is a fact. However, does this give the US the rights to kill him without the proper procedure of going through trial? Imagine you were Osama. You killed people, and you deserve death. However, since you are unarmed, you are defencelessness, and you have not yet proven guilty, shouldn't you be allowed to live a few days, weeks or months until it is confirmed that you are guilty? Shouldn't you be given the chance to settle your own affairs and tell your family and friends about the news? If your answer is yes, then why must the US deprive Osama of human rights and assassinate him?
The US should have given Osama justice, by allowing him the chance to settle his personal affairs before death. Since he is no more threat, as he is safely caught and unarmed, there is no need to kill him straight away. The US should give everyone, including Osama proper rights, which is the proper procedure of going through imprisonment and trial. By assassinating him, the US is violating human rights! Furthermore, this might show the image that the US will not give terrorist a chance to mend their ways as upon seeing a terrorist, Osama, the US killed him.
I strongly believe that every human being, be it the US president Obama, or the head of terrorists, should be punished if they did wrong, but ought to be given proper rights like any other men, from the day they are born, until the day they are dead. Each of us is innocent until proven guilty by court. Since Osama was not yet proven guilty when killed, he is considered innocent, and killing an innocent man is a crime! In conclusion, only the court have the power to end someone's life, and the US should not kill Osama at first sight even though he had caused great harm, as they do not have the right to do so.

ReplyDeleteHi Chia ler.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your reasoning, I do not agree with your stand. First of all, you had said that Osama had not been proven guilty. This is a very huge mistake in your speech, as everyone knows, that even before this incident, he was already proven guilty !!
Secondly, you said that once he was being captured, he would not be of any threat. I would like to caution you of using the definite word " would not". Look at Mas Selamat. He was being captured as well, but he escaped !! This showed how witty terrorists can be and they had many tricks up their sleeves.
Lastly, you had stated that he need to inform his family. My point is, if he really care about his families and relationship, why would he put them into risk by committing all these crimes?
I'm not saying that you are wrong and I'm right, but these are just my opinions you can consider.
Although I agree with the fact that Osama should have been given a fair trial, which is a basic human right. However I do not agree with your standpoint that assassinating Osama was wrong because under international laws had he surrendered and prove that he is unarmed he would be spared death on the spot, and in this case he did not. Hence I feel that it was a risk to capture him as it might actually cause more lives to be more lost as doing this would endanger the lives of the Navy Seals.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading you blog post, I feel that you have been confused between the themes of justice and mercy. Justice is to give a person what he or she rightly deserves, while mercy is to give a person what he or she does not deserve, but is good for them. Showing justice to Osama bin Laden would be to punish him for his crimes, as that is what Osama deserved for killing so many people in the 911 attack. Mercy would be not to kill him. By not killing him when he killed so many people would be giving him something that he does not deserve, since he did so much wrong by killing so many people. However, it would be good for bin Laden since he does not have to suffer the pain of them.
ReplyDeleteYour stand was that showing justice was not killing him. However, showing justice would be to judge him on a trial then kill him. It makes no real difference whether he was put on a trial or just assassinated, since the proof against him committing the 911 attack is too overwhelming to deny his guilt. Thus, I believe that your understanding of justice and mercy is flawed. You have to make clear the meaning of both before you begin writing your blog prompt.
I do not agree with what you have said. In fact, I feel that Obama should be killed or assassinated as soon as possible so as to prevent any more terrorists attacks. Remember Chia Ler, Osama was a wanted terrorist for so many years, and if we do not do something against him, he would definitely harm us sooner or later. If it were a normal criminal, I would have also felt the same way, but for this case, it is a terrorist that is really threatening the lives of people in the world, and hence I feel that it is good for USA to assassinate him.
